The Arizona Market Project
The Project
In May 2002, Pine led a team of seven Balkan journalists on a two week investigative project in northeast Bosnia. Pine acted as editor and rewriter on all the stories.
To produce the eight-story package, seven journalists and a photo-journalist from Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia went to Bosnia's infamous Arizona Market in the Brcko District to look at the coming showdown between its western style future and its lawless past.
The "gray" market a success at bringing together ethnic communities shortly after the end of the war in the ex-Yugoslavia, soon became a source of embarrassment to the international community as a home for organized crime. The market has the promise of a new future when Italproject starts rebuilding the it as a snazzy upscale shopping center in June 2002.
But can the international community and local authorities keep organized crime out of the new market?
